Safe giving and collecting

Givekindly is a place for neighbours to help each other. The Givekindly team reads fundraisers and items before they go live, but we don't check who people are. Please use your own judgement and these practical tips.

In an emergency, or if someone is in immediate danger, call 999.

Handing over or collecting an item

  • Meet in a busy public place in daylight, or do a doorstep handover so nobody needs to come inside.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Take someone with you if you can, especially for larger items.
  • Only share the details needed to arrange the handover. You don't need to give your full address until you're comfortable.
  • If anything feels wrong when you arrive, you can leave.

Money and personal details

  • Never share bank or card details, passwords or security codes with anyone you meet through Givekindly.
  • Items on Givekindly are free. Don't send money for delivery, deposits or "holding" an item.
  • Don't send money to people you don't know. Only give to fundraisers run by people you know and trust.

Warning signs

  • Pressure to act quickly, or to keep things secret.
  • Offers that seem too good to be true.
  • Requests to move the conversation somewhere else, or to pay in an unusual way such as gift cards or crypto.
  • A story that changes, or someone who won't answer simple questions.

Reporting a concern

Every public fundraiser and item page has a Report a concern button. You'll need to be signed in. Pick a reason, add any details, and send it. Only the Givekindly team sees reports, and the person who posted won't see who sent it.

For a safeguarding worry about a child or an adult at risk, you can also email safeguarding@givekindly.org. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999 first.
